SERVICE LEARNING

BIO 110N - Environmental Sciences

Environmental Sciences, for nonbiology majors, is the course taken for Service Learning. There were topics discussed such as evolution, invasive species, ecosystems, and conservation. The course was mainly based around the balance that the many ecosystems of the world must remain in. If an ecosystem becomes unbalanced, say with an invasive species, then changes will begin taking place in this ecosystem until it either evolves or dies off. The environment must remain in a state of balance, otherwise problems will begin occurring, that may or may not be reversed.

In the lab section of this course, we learned about the topics stated above in a more interactive way. We would conduct virtual labs to represent topics such as evolution, the distribution of genes/traits, and current environmental issues. There was also an end of semester project, that involved researching a current environmental issue. It is located below.

This powerpoint represents the research found on an environmental issue. Our research topic was White-Nose Syndrome in North American Bats.

This project helped understand the importance that living organisms play specific roles in their ecosystems. The North American Bats becoming ill and dying off caused a lot of issues within those areas.

This course introduced me to obtaining and processing information, and creating written reports. It also helped to be within a group that was outside of a business course. Working in groups outside of the business courses helped me to understand how differently things may work because of the different environment, and the different ways of gathering information.
